Tata Steel's Green Initiative Approved: A New Era for Sustainable Steelmaking in the UK

Tata Steel's plans for a new electric arc furnace in Port Talbot have been approved by the local planning authority. The £1.25 billion project, supported by £500 million in UK government funding, aims to cut on-site CO2 emissions by 90%. Despite the loss of nearly 3,000 jobs due to blast furnace closures, Tata says 5,000 UK-based jobs have been saved. The company is committed to begin large-scale work this summer, with the furnace expected to be operational by the end of 2027. Wales Secretary Jo Stevens welcomed the decision, describing it as a significant step forward for the future of steelmaking in South Wales.
