Thali Prices Plummet: Home-Cooked Meals Offer Relief to Indian Households

In a welcome respite for Indian consumers, the cost of home-cooked thalis saw a significant drop in January 2025. Vegetarian thali prices fell by 9% month-on-month, while non-vegetarian thalis decreased by 4%. This decline was primarily driven by a 34% reduction in tomato prices, coupled with 16% and 21% drops in potato and onion prices, respectively. The price relief comes as fresh rabi crop supplies enter the market, easing inflationary pressures on household budgets. However, year-on-year comparisons still show a 2% increase for vegetarian thalis and a 17% surge for non-vegetarian options.
