The Last Stand of 2G: Why It's Hard to Say Goodbye

Several nations are struggling to switch off 2G networks because of fears of digital exclusion. Even with attempts to reuse spectrum for 4G and 5G, millions of low-income subscribers depend on 2G for essential services. Vietnam managed to switch off by providing free 4G handsets, but nations such as South Africa and India have postponed shutdowns owing to access issues. The shutdown will not only impact personal communications but also critical services such as mobile money and IoT applications. To date, 61 countries have scheduled or commenced 2G shutdowns, which underscore the imperative for inclusive transition planning.
