The Light of Odissi is Severed: Legendary Guru Mayadhar Raut Dies at 92

The Padma Shri awardee and revered as the "Father of Odissi Dance," Guru Mayadhar Raut passed away at 92 on February 22, 2025, in New Delhi. Raut's work in reviving and codifying Odissi as a classical dance form is pivotal. His contributions include the introduction of Sanchari Bhava, Mudra-Viniyoga, and Rasa Theory into the field of Odissi. Besides this, he has co-founded the Jayantika Association. His disciple and daughter, Odissi dancer Madhumita Raut, will carry forward his legacy. Raut's death will mark the end of the era of Odissi dance.
