India’s civil aviation sector witnessed a historic milestone today as Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) commenced commercial operations. The long-awaited second airport for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region began with a calibrated rollout, handling around 30 flights daily, including 15 arrivals and 15 departures.

Key Highlights

• The inaugural flights included IndiGo services from Bengaluru and Delhi, marking the official start of passenger operations. Other carriers such as Air India Express, Akasa Air, and Star Air are also part of the initial schedule.
• NMIA spans over 1,160 hectares and is designed to eventually handle up to 90 million passengers annually, making it one of the largest aviation projects in India.
• On its opening day, flights connected cities including Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mangaluru, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Goa, and Nanded. Regional connectivity was emphasized with Star Air operating the Nanded sector.
