The Signal Struggle: Why India's Mobile Networks Are Failing Users

Indian mobile network quality is under the spotlight as consumer discontent mounts because of constant call drops, sluggish internet speeds, and network disruptions. The Telecom Ministry has introduced steps to enhance service quality, such as monitoring call quality on a monthly basis from April 2025, changing from a three-month cycle. This strategy is meant to offer more real-time evaluations and focused enhancements at the cell level, as opposed to merely the tower level. Nevertheless, telecom operators such as Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea have complained about new TRAI rules, pointing to higher compliance expenses and weights.

 

Recent disruptions, including BSNL's massive network failure in January 2025, have further fueled user anger. Despite progress in 5G technology, problems like network congestion and service quality remain, with 89% of mobile subscribers experiencing call connection and drop problems. The government is considering relooking at service quality parameters to fix these issues, but operators say that factors outside their control, such as availability of spectrum and infrastructure issues, also affect the network.
