Untapped Power: J&K's Hydroelectric Potential Could Light Up Millions

Javed Ahmad Rana, the Minister for Jal Shakti in Jammu and Kashmir, declared on Tuesday that the union territory has a potential hydropower capacity of 18,000 MW. He stated that 14,867 MW is notably recognized across three main river basins: Chenab (11,283 MW), Jhelum (3,084 MW), and Ravi (500 MW). The Minister said that out of the recognized potential, 3,540.15 MW (23.81%) of electricity has been generated. This total includes 1,197.4 MW from the UT sector, 2,250 MW from the central sector, and 92.75 MW from independent power producers. The minister reported that Jammu and Kashmir has also made strides in solar energy, with 75 MW of rooftop solar enabled in several sectors; however, large-scale solar projects are hindered by challenging terrain in the region. The government is committed to developing sustainable energy alternatives and reducing reliance on conventional energy sources in Jammu and Kashmir.
