The Uttar Pradesh technical education department is preparing to make industry exposure compulsory for engineering and diploma students, with at least two industrial visits planned for every learner. The move aims to plug the classroom-to-career gap and align technical education with real-world jobs and the state’s trillion-dollar economy ambition.

Industry Exposure Becomes Non-Negotiable

At a recent review meeting, state technical education minister Ashish Patel directed officials to draft a proposal mandating a minimum of two industrial visits and structured industrial training for all students in technical institutes. He stressed that engineering graduates cannot be confined to “bookish knowledge” and must see how expressways, tunnels, factories and power systems actually work on the ground.

What Different Streams Will See On Ground

Civil engineering students will be taken to expressway, tunnel and dam construction sites, while mechanical and electrical engineering students will visit EV manufacturing plants and other industrial units for hands-on exposure to modern machinery and production lines. Other branches are expected to be mapped to IT, electronics, manufacturing and services hubs as the policy framework is finalised in consultation with industry.

Placements, AI And A Jobs-First Push

The initiative is part of a broader jobs-focused overhaul that includes a central placement portal, AI-linked courses and better NAAC and NIRF rankings. Thousands of students have already been onboarded on the department’s placement platform, and a dedicated landing page with a major jobs portal is being built to connect UP’s technical graduates with local, private-sector and global opportunities.
