Vande Bharat Sleeper Set For Trial Run, Puts Overnight Rail Travel On Faster Track

Indian Railways will begin trial runs of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Class train within the next two months, marking a key step in taking the semi high speed brand into the overnight, long distance segment. Until now, Vande Bharat has meant chair car services on daytime routes. The sleeper version is designed to bring that same speed and polish to night journeys where most Indians still rely on older mail and express trains.

The move comes after successful high speed testing of prototype sleeper rakes, including trial runs that touched 180 kmph on the Kota Nagda section under the Commissioner of Railway Safety’s watch. With interiors reworked into AC three tier, two tier and first class coaches, the new train aims to blend higher speeds with quieter cabins, better suspension and more modern amenities. For passengers used to rattling, overnight rides, it promises a very different kind of experience.  

What The Trial Run Will Focus On  

In the upcoming two month window, Railways will put the Vande Bharat Sleeper through a mix of speed, braking, safety and comfort checks on selected routes. Engineers will monitor ride quality at semi high speeds, energy consumption, noise levels, air conditioning performance and how well the new design handles typical Indian track conditions. The trials will also test how quickly passengers can board, settle into berths and disembark on a timetable that is tighter than conventional overnight services.  

What It Means For Passengers And The Network  

If all goes well, the sleeper variant will eventually be deployed on 1,200–1,500 km corridors, offering faster overnight options between major cities and regions. For passengers, that could mean leaving after dinner, waking up closer to their destination and paying a premium over regular AC classes for better punctuality and comfort. For Railways, the project is part of a broader push to refresh its fleet, attract higher yielding travellers back from low cost airlines and signal that modernisation is not limited to daytime business routes.
