WABAG Taps Into Bengaluru’s Future with World Bank-Backed Water Tech Triumph

VA Tech WABAG, the largest water technology multinational company in India, has secured a prestigious World Bank-funded Design, Build, Operate (DBO) contract of INR 380 crore of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). The contract is a key component of the Karnataka Water Security and Disaster Resilience Program and is for the construction of cutting-edge Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) in four locations in Bommanahalli, which is the hub of the city's sustainable water management initiative.

Project Value & Tenure:

The project, whose value is estimated at INR 380 crore, involves EPC of WWTPs in 30 months, including operations and maintenance for 10 years.

 

State-of-the-Art Facilities:

All WWTPs must incorporate tertiary treatment, biogas production, solar sludge drying beds, and mid-pumping stations such that there is maximum resource recovery and operating efficiency.

 

Sustainability at Core:

Recycled wastewater will be reused for industrial applications—reducing freshwater use—while biogas that is captured will be used to fuel plant equipment, reducing external energy use and the facility's carbon footprint.

 

Strategic Importance:

This project is instrumental to Bengaluru's fight against water shortage and climate risk, as it is part of a bigger movement to revive lakes, recharge aquifers, and improve emergency response mechanisms.

Funding & Partnerships:

The scheme is funded largely by a $426 million World Bank loan, under the overall Karnataka Water Security and Disaster Resilience project benefiting over four million.
