WFH Wishlist: Central Government Staff Push For Remote Work And Virtual-First Governance

A central government employees body has formally urged the Centre to frame clear guidelines on work from home, online meetings and virtual conferencing for government offices. Citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent call to cut avoidable expenditure amid the West Asia crisis, the association wants WFH to be treated as a serious productivity and savings tool, not just a Covid-era exception.

An association representing Central Secretariat Service (CSS) officers, who form the backbone of the central secretariat, has written to the Department of Personnel and Training seeking a structured work from home policy. The move aligns with the Prime Minister’s appeal to revive remote work, virtual meetings and digital collaboration to save fuel, ease congestion and support national energy security.

What The Employees Are Asking For

The CSS Forum has urged DoPT to issue comprehensive WFH guidelines covering when, how and for which roles remote work can be deployed. It argues that a balanced framework for work from home, online meetings and virtual conferences can enhance productivity, improve employee well-being and accelerate digital governance. The body also links the shift to the vision of a “green secretariat”, with lower travel, paper use and in-person meetings.

Energy Efficiency, Cost Cuts And Wider Support

The demand comes after Modi asked organisations to revive practices like work from home, greater use of public transport, carpooling and virtual meetings to curb fuel consumption during the West Asia crisis. The All India NPS Employees Federation has backed the call, urging the government to adopt WFH and virtual meetings “for the welfare and progress of our country”. Together, these voices suggest that remote work for government staff is increasingly being framed as a nation-building and cost-optimisation measure, not merely an employee perk.
