Will NASA's Extended Missions Mean Extra Pay for Astronauts?

NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore have been on a prolonged mission on the International Space Station (ISS) for almost nine months because of technical problems. Though they have been away for so long, they will not be paid overtime. As federal workers, their stay in space is considered like any other ordinary work trip, with NASA paying for their living costs. The only extra pay is a meager daily stipend of $4 for incidentals. Following more than 287 days in space, Williams and Wilmore are due to get approximately $1,148 each as extra pay. They are due back on Earth on March 18, aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon vehicle. The longer-than-expected mission has generated great public interest and has shown the difficulty of space exploration.
