Yellow Line Gets a Fourth Gear—Bengaluru’s Metro Picks Up Speed and Style

Bengaluru’s metro commuters have a reason to cheer as the city’s bustling Yellow Line is gearing up for a frequency boost. The first coach of the fourth trainset for the Namma Metro’s Yellow Line has arrived in the city, marking a significant step toward easing congestion and improving service intervals. With the remaining five coaches expected within days, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is preparing to assemble and test the new train, which is slated to enter passenger service by early September.

This development comes amid record-breaking ridership numbers and growing demand for faster, more frequent metro services across the city.

- The first of six coaches for the fourth Yellow Line trainset reached Bengaluru after a 15-day road journey from Titagarh Rail Systems Limited’s factory in Kolkata

Behind the scenes: manufacturing and delays

The coaches were manufactured by Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) under a sub-contract with China’s state-owned CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co Ltd. The original ₹1,578-crore contract awarded in December 2019 included 36 trainsets—15 for the Yellow Line and 21 for the Purple and Green lines.  

However, the delivery schedule faced multiple setbacks. CRRC struggled to find a local partner and later encountered visa issues for its engineers. Despite these hurdles, the prototype train was delivered in February 2024, followed by two additional trainsets earlier this year. All three are currently in service on the 19.15-km Yellow Line corridor.

Testing and commissioning timeline

- The newly arrived trainset will undergo static testing at the Hebbagodi depot  
- Mainline testing will be conducted at night for approximately two weeks  
- The train will be integrated with the metro’s signalling, telecommunications, and power systems  
- Upon successful trials, the train will be inducted into passenger service  

Impact on commuters and ridership

The Yellow Line, which connects RV Road to Bommasandra, was inaugurated on August 10 and began operations on August 11 with three trains. The limited fleet led to a 25-minute wait time during peak hours, causing overcrowding at stations.  

Despite the initial frequency, the line has seen overwhelming public response. On its second day of operation, Namma Metro recorded over 10.32 lakh rides across all lines, with the Yellow Line alone contributing significantly to the surge.  

- Initial ridership estimates for the Yellow Line were 25,000 to 30,000  
- Actual boardings exceeded 83,000 on the first day  
- The RV Road interchange station saw over 30,000 passengers switching between Green and Yellow lines

Technology and future outlook

The Yellow Line trains are equipped with Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology, enabling driverless operations. While manual operation is currently in place, CBTC is designed to reduce train intervals from 150 seconds to as low as 90 seconds in the future.  

As Bengaluru’s metro network expands, the addition of new trainsets and advanced technology promises smoother, faster, and more reliable urban transit. The arrival of the fourth Yellow Line train is a key milestone in that journey.
