20 Lakh Reasons to Smile: TN's Massive Tech Giveaway for Students

In a big boost to online education, Tamil Nadu government has committed Rs 2,000 crore for a free laptop scheme in its 2025-26 Budget. Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu said 20 lakh college students will be given a laptop or a tablet over the next two years. The initiative is aimed at improving digital learning and bridging the technology divide among students. The scheme is one of a string of announcements made by the state on education and skill development, including increasing the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme and introducing a gamut of student welfare steps under the 'Samagra Shiksha' scheme. The state's focus on education remains firm even as there has been continued confrontation with the Centre on funding relating to issues of divergence on language policy.
