2024: Deadliest Year for Journalists in Over Three Decades

Last year marked a grim milestone with 124 journalists killed around the world, making 2024 the deadliest year for the press since the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) began its tracking in the 1990s. Almost 70% of these fatalities were connected to Israeli military actions during the Israel-Gaza war, resulting in the deaths of 85 journalists, including 82 Palestinians. CPJ has criticized Israel for its lack of accountability and transparency in investigating these incidents.  The report also points to a worrying trend of increasing journalist deaths in global conflicts, with Sudan and Pakistan reporting significant casualties as well. Freelancers made up one-third of the fatalities, highlighting their heightened vulnerability in conflict zones.  This unprecedented loss emphasizes the escalating dangers faced by journalists worldwide and the pressing need for enhanced protections for media professionals.
