A Penny for Your Thoughts...and Water: Bengaluru Water Tariffs Rise

Bengaluru residents will soon be paying a higher water tariff for the first time in 11 years. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said the tariff will go up by one paisa per litre, much lower than the proposed 7-8 paise increase by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). The decision follows months of speculation and will help solve the financial woes and increasing operational costs of BWSSB. The hike is likely to raise household water bills by ₹400 to ₹500 a month. The decision will be finalized after consulting Bengaluru MLAs before the BBMP budget. The step also points to problems with apartment developers who have not paid BWSSB for water connections.
