AI Unlocks the Brain: The Next Era of Epilepsy Diagnosis

Researchers at King's College London and University College London have developed AI software called MELD Graph that can identify two-thirds of epilepsy brain lesions typically overlooked by clinicians. The software reads MRI scans quicker and more accurately than radiologists and can potentially diagnose epilepsy patients earlier and treat them earlier. In a trial on 1,185 patients at 23 epilepsy centers worldwide, MELD Graph demonstrated that it could identify subtle abnormalities that might otherwise be overlooked. This technology would significantly enhance the treatment of around 30,000 patients in the UK and 4 million worldwide with drug-resistant epilepsy.
