Forced Digital Referrals:

With effect from now, digital issuance of all referrals for cashless treatment at the 1,500+ empanelled hospitals by in-house Indian Railway Health Service (IRHS) doctors is mandatory. This change benefits 12.5 lakh serving staff, 18 lakh pensioners, and 35 lakh dependents, simplifying access to the entire beneficiary base.

Patient Choice and Transparency:

To stem corruption and nepotism, IRHS physicians are now prohibited from prescribing individual hospitals. Beneficiaries can choose any empanelled hospital at will for their treatment. Patients will also be in a position to rate their experience, pushing up service quality and accountability.

Simplified Cancer Care:

Cancer patients will now need just one digital referral for the complete course of cashless care, reducing frequent paperwork and ensuring smoother, unbroken care.

Tech-Driven Healthcare:

This effort takes place on the back of the gradual implementation of the Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) in 129 railway hospitals and 586 health units. The beneficiaries are provided with access to their digital medical records, appointment booking, and teleconsultation services through a specific mobile app, improving healthcare accessibility and ease of access.

Broader Impact:

The drive towards digitization is completely integrated with national health programs and distinctive medical IDs, enabling smooth, transparent, and patient-focused healthcare for crores of individuals.

With more than 2,200 digital referrals handled on day one, Indian Railways' ambitious move is going to revolutionize healthcare access for its massive population.
