Auto, Taxi, VIP—Pick Your Lane, Kolkata’s Got Rules Now

Kolkata’s bustling Sealdah station, one of the busiest transit hubs in Eastern India, is undergoing a strategic traffic transformation. In a bid to streamline vehicular movement and reduce congestion, Eastern Railway has launched a trial run for dedicated vehicle lanes under the station’s canopy. The initiative, rolled out on Friday, is part of a larger traffic circulation plan designed to ease commuter experience ahead of the festive Puja season.

The trial marks a significant shift in how vehicles will navigate the station’s circulating area, with distinct lanes assigned to different categories of transport. Officials hope this will reduce bottlenecks, improve safety, and enhance the overall flow of passengers and vehicles.

1. Lane segmentation under the canopy  
   - The innermost lane is now reserved exclusively for autos and three-wheelers  
   - The second lane is designated for yellow taxis and pre-paid cabs, with a new pre-paid taxi counter being set up  
   - The third lane accommodates private cars, app-based cabs, and e-bikes, with conditional stopping allowed based on traffic density  
   - The outermost lane is earmarked for vehicles heading to the parking zone, app cabs arriving from outside, and VIP/VVIP vehicles  

2. Special provisions for emergency vehicles  
   - Ambulances are exempt from lane restrictions and may access the station via any lane for swift entry  

3. Temporary infrastructure for trial phase  
   - Delineators have been installed to mark lanes during the trial period  
   - Feedback from this phase will inform permanent infrastructure and signage  

4. Platform access and commuter convenience  
   - Two separate drop-off points are being created to segregate suburban and mail/express train passengers  
   - This aims to reduce criss-crossing and confusion, allowing smoother entry to designated platforms  

5. No-stopping zones and traffic regulation  
   - The plan includes strict no-stopping zones around the canopy to prevent gridlocks  
   - Waiting time for vehicles in certain lanes will be regulated based on real-time traffic density
