Banks Lend More, But Deposits Lag: What's Behind the Gap?

Bank credit growth has eased but still surpasses deposit growth, RBI figures show. Outstanding bank credit was at Rs 179.9 lakh crore as of February 21, up 11% year-on-year, while deposits stood at Rs 222 lakh crore, rising 10.3% year-on-year. The credit-to-deposit ratio rose to 79.1%, led by slower growth in deposits on the back of higher base effects as well as weaker CASA growth. Increasing interest rates have pushed term deposits, while growth rates have slowed down on an overall basis compared to past years.
