TRAI emphasizes that a strong Digital Connectivity Infrastructure (DCI) should be woven into building codes, especially since seamless 5G and future 6G services demand top-notch in-building networks. Among the key proposals is the requirement for digital ratings to be mandatory for all significant public buildings—like airports, railway stations, and commercial complexes—within a year of receiving occupancy certification. TRAI also advocates for property managers to take charge of internal connectivity systems, ensuring fair access for all telecom providers and preventing monopolies. For older buildings, they encourage voluntary upgrades, with phased support from state governments. TRAI’s position comes at a time when high-frequency 5G signals are having a tough time penetrating dense building materials, making solid indoor infrastructure crucial for India’s digital future.
