Capital Tailwind: Delhi’s ATF Tax Reset Offers Fresh Lift-Off To Airlines

In a bid to strengthen regional connectivity and support India’s civil aviation growth, the Delhi government has approved a steep reduction in VAT on ATF. By cutting the tax rate from 25 per cent to 7 per cent, the Cabinet aims to attract more flights, improve airline profitability on Delhi routes, and ultimately pass on benefits to passengers through more affordable ticket prices.  

Why The ATF VAT Cut Matters  

Aviation Turbine Fuel accounts for a significant share of airline operating costs, and high state taxes often translate into higher airfares and reduced route viability. Lowering VAT to 7 per cent brings Delhi in line with more aviation-friendly states, making it more attractive for airlines to base aircraft, add new routes, and increase frequencies from the city.

With the VAT cut, airlines flying from Delhi can see a meaningful reduction in their fuel tax burden, improving margins or allowing them to price more competitively on key domestic and international sectors.
