On the second leg of his five-nation tour, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Netherlands puts three themes at the centre of India–Dutch ties: semiconductors, clean energy and diaspora diplomacy. Talks with Prime Minister Rob Jetten are expected to firm up a Strategic Partnership that links Dutch tech, ports and capital to India’s growth.
Modi landed in the Netherlands on Friday for meetings with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, with trade, technology and green energy dominating the agenda. While the stop may lack the spectacle of larger European capitals, analysts say it could prove one of India’s most consequential engagements in Europe this year.
Tapping Dutch Strength In Chips
At the heart of the visit is an effort to deepen cooperation with semiconductor ecosystem leaders such as ASML, whose lithography tools are indispensable to modern chip manufacturing.
India, which has announced billions in incentives for chip fabs and packaging units, sees Dutch know‑how and supply-chain integration as essential to turning its semiconductor ambition into reality, making Eindhoven and its tech cluster key partners.
Green Hydrogen And Water Management
The two sides are also prioritising green hydrogen, offshore wind and other clean‑energy technologies, as both India and Europe attempt to decarbonise heavy industry and power.
Water management is another major pillar: the Netherlands’ centuries of experience in flood control, delta management and climate‑resilient infrastructure dovetail with India’s need to tackle urban flooding, coastal erosion and river-basin stress.
Using Rotterdam As India’s Gateway
The Netherlands is already one of India’s biggest European partners, with bilateral trade near 28 billion dollars and cumulative Dutch FDI exceeding 55 billion, making it India’s fourth‑largest global investor.
Rotterdam’s status as Europe’s largest port and the country’s role as a financial and logistics hub mean that a stronger relationship effectively gives India a deeper plug‑in to the arteries of European commerce.
People Power And Political Signalling
Modi is expected to address the Indian community and highlight their role as a bridge between the two countries, building on a diaspora that has grown steadily over the past decade.
India and the Netherlands are moving to formalise a Strategic Partnership framework that locks in long‑term cooperation across semiconductors, green hydrogen, defence, agriculture, innovation and mobility of skilled talent.
