CMRL’s Big Move: Metro to Connect City Hub with New Airport

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has filed a detailed project report of a 52.94-km metro rail extension from Poonamallee to the proposed Parandur airport. The project costing an estimated Rs 15,906 crore will link major industrial and residential clusters. Experts have suggested that the 27.9-km section from Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram be given priority in the first phase, with 14 elevated stations and an estimated cost of Rs 8,779 crore. The whole project will include 20 elevated stations and will link with the Kuthambakkam Bus Terminus and major roads. The extension will reduce road congestion, lower travel time, and offer improved transit facilities to residents and industrial workers.
