Coal Giant's Green Leap: Coal India Ventures into Synthetic Natural Gas

Coal India Limited (CIL) has taken a bold step towards diversification by incorporating a new subsidiary, Coal Gas India Ltd, on March 25, 2025. This joint venture with GAIL (India) Ltd aims to establish a coal-to-synthetic natural gas (SNG) business. With an authorized share capital of ₹11 lakh, CIL holds a 51% stake in the venture. The new company will focus on manufacturing SNG and various organic and inorganic chemical compounds, setting up necessary plants, and engaging in captive coal mining. This strategic move aligns with India's push for cleaner energy alternatives and marks CIL's entry into the synthetic gas sector. The initiative is expected to boost the country's energy security and reduce dependence on imported natural gas.
