Coal Minister Reddy Fast-Tracks Mining Approvals to Boost India's Energy Future

The Indian government, headed by Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy, has announced joint initiatives with state governments to ease approvals for coal mine operators. Addressing the inauguration of the 12th round of auctions of commercial coal mines, Reddy highlighted the need for early operationalization of mines in addition to auctions. A total of 25 coal blocks comprising lignite reserves and partially explored mines are on sale in this round.

Reddy reaffirmed the government's pledge to "ease of doing business" through the elimination of bottlenecks and transparency in the coal sector. He requested private and state-owned companies to accelerate mining while ensuring complete support from the government. The ministry of coal auctioned 125 mines since 2020 and has a collective production capacity of 273 million tonnes per annum. Production through commercial mines has increased by 78% in this fiscal.

The project also fits into sustainability objectives, among them having a 100-million-tonne coal gasification target by 2030. Industry captains such as Naveen Jindal have demanded proactive state-level monitoring to ensure that there are no delays in the operationalization of mines, pointing to the need for enhanced coordination between central and state governments.
