Crispy Success: India’s French Fry Industry Grows from Imports to Exports

India has experienced a remarkable transformation in its frozen potato products industry, evolving from importing over 6,000 metric tonnes of French fries in 2007 to exporting approximately 67,700 metric tonnes in the fiscal year 2022-23. 

This significant growth is largely attributed to contract farming initiatives in Gujarat, where companies like HyFun Foods collaborate directly with local farmers to cultivate specific potato varieties such as Santana and Frysona, ideal for French fry production. This model ensures a consistent supply of high-quality produce, benefiting both the agricultural industry and farmers, and has positioned India as a key player in the global frozen potato market.
