Calcutta University has pushed back its sixth-semester theory examinations to June 15 after election-related disruptions and campus requisitions threw the original timetable off course. The revised schedule aims to give colleges time to return to normal and students a clearer, more predictable exam window after weeks of uncertainty around the West Bengal Assembly polls.

University officials had already been firefighting clashes between examination dates and polling schedules, with several April papers postponed or reshuffled due to campuses being taken over for security deployment. With many affiliated colleges used as centres for central forces and election logistics, CU has effectively chosen to compress its sixth-semester theory exams into a later, tighter slot rather than risk last-minute cancellations.

Why The Sixth Semester Had To Move

In the run-up to polling, multiple CU notices flagged “logistical challenges” and the unavailability of college buildings for exams, especially after April 13. Several urban and rural campuses were requisitioned as distribution centres and accommodation for Central Armed Police Forces, leaving no spare classrooms or halls. Instead of staggering papers around the polling calendar, the university has now bundled the sixth-semester theory papers into a post-election window beginning June 15, aligning with the updated semester VI routines published at the end of May.

What This Means For Students

For final-year undergraduates, the delay is a mixed bag. The revised date gives extra preparation time and removes the looming clash with election noise, traffic curbs and security lockdowns. But it also nudges results and degree timelines further down the year, potentially affecting those eyeing early postgraduate admissions, competitive exams or out-of-state applications. CU has signalled that it will try to minimise that lag by keeping practicals and evaluation schedules tight once theory papers are completed.
