Delhi's Electric Dream: No More Petrol Bikes from 2026

In a historic decision, the Delhi government will put in place a ban on the registration of new petrol and diesel two-wheelers from August 2026. This is a part of the upcoming Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0 to push for cleaner mobility in the capital. When the ban is implemented, new customers will be able to purchase only electric scooters and motorbikes in Delhi. The policy also suggests that each household must have a minimum of one electric vehicle as their third car.

The government is also planning to stop new registrations of petrol and diesel three-wheelers from August 2024. Older CNG-run auto-rickshaws above 10 years will need to be replaced with electric ones or fitted with electric powertrains.

To facilitate this shift, Delhi is looking to put up more than 13,200 charging points in the city, with one station every five kilometers. The government's target is to attain 95% EV penetration by 2027, which will make it one of the most aggressive clean mobility programs in the nation.
