Delhi's Healthcare Revolution: PMJAY Scheme Expands to Private Hospitals

The Delhi government is busy implementing the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), the largest health assurance scheme in the world, by inducting private hospitals. This scheme plans to provide free health insurance coverage to more than 654,000 families in Delhi, including economically weaker sections and elderly citizens aged 70 years and above.

Although the scheme offers coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh per family per year, private hospitals are concerned about delayed payments and package rates being too low. Top hospital chains such as Max, Fortis, and Apollo have shown apprehensions due to inadequate pricing mechanisms and cash flow problems. Negotiations are underway to resolve these and to induce participation.

The National Health Authority (NHA), which is tasked with rolling out PMJAY, is sensitizing hospitals and training state health officials to facilitate easy onboarding. The Delhi government has set aside Rs 2,144 crore for the scheme and is hopeful of addressing issues raised by private hospitals.

Delhi has become the 35th state/UT to launch PMJAY, a major step towards affordable healthcare for crores. The government is expecting private hospitals to come on board, further improving healthcare services for beneficiaries.
