A 5.1 magnitude earthquake shook the Bay of Bengal at 6:10 AM IST today, with tremors felt across Kolkata and parts of West Bengal. The National Centre for Seismology reported the epicenter at coordinates 19.52°N latitude and 88.55°E longitude, with a depth of 91 kilometers. Residents in Kolkata experienced mild shaking, causing brief panic among early risers. However, no immediate reports of damage or casualties have emerged. The earthquake brought back memories of past seismic events for some residents in Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Authorities have yet to comment on the situation, and no evacuation orders have been issued.
