Election Commission’s Bengal Blitz: Critical Review Meetings Set Stage for 2026 Voter Roll Revamp

Ahead of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, senior officials from the Election Commission of India (ECI) are set to conduct comprehensive review meetings in the state starting October 8. This visit highlights the preparations underway to ensure the readiness of key districts as the state gears up for the assembly elections due in 2026.

 

The ECI delegation, led by Senior Deputy Election Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti along with Director General (IT) Seema Khanna and other senior officials, will engage in a series of meetings with district-level election officers to closely assess the progress of numerous pre-revision activities. A crucial part of their review includes the mapping of the 2002 electoral roll with the current 2025 voter list, ensuring accuracy and identifying discrepancies. This review aims to streamline the electoral roll update to reflect legitimate voters accurately.

 

Another key area of focus is the appointment and training of Booth Level Officers (BLOs), a vital cadre responsible for voter identification and enrollment at the grassroots level. Given the expectation of increased polling booths and the challenge of BLO shortages, the ECI has emphasized rigorous preparation and has already started training thousands of election officials to handle the upcoming roll revision effectively.

 

Ahead of these meetings, the ECI has directed Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) across all districts to participate remotely via video conference, providing updates on the disposal status of various forms and other logistical matters. This coordinated effort ensures uniform progress across the state's 294 assembly constituencies.

 

The Special Intensive Revision process involves a detailed scrutiny where voters need to verify their details against previous rolls, with voter data from 2002 serving as a base for comparison. Individuals present on both lists will be retained automatically, while others will require further verification to ensure the accuracy and integrity of voter data.

 

Political tensions remain amid this exercise, with concerns raised by some parties about potential exclusions. Nonetheless, the ECI is focused on a transparent and efficient electoral roll update to facilitate smooth, fair voting in the upcoming state elections.
