Empowering Women, One Hostel at a Time: Government Allocates 5,000 Crore for Safe Spaces

The Indian government has taken a significant step towards empowering women by sanctioning 5,000 crore for the construction of new women's hostels across 28 states. This initiative, under the Sakhi Niwas Scheme, aims to provide safe, secure, and affordable accommodation for working women and those pursuing higher education or training. It is a crucial move to enhance women's participation in the workforce and promote the vision of women-led development.

The funding, allocated under the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment, will support greenfield construction of hostels, a provision not typically included in the Sakhi Niwas Scheme. The first installment of funds has already been released to the states after assessing their requirements. These hostels will cater to urban, semi-urban, and rural areas, ensuring accessibility for women in diverse regions.

In addition to the Sakhi Niwas Scheme, the Empowered Committee under the Nirbhaya Fund has approved additional hostels in states like Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Nagaland, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, and even for the University of Delhi. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to creating a supportive infrastructure that addresses the unique needs of women, including daycare facilities for working mothers.

By providing these essential facilities, the government aims to create an environment where women can thrive professionally and academically, contributing to the nation's socio-economic growth.
