Face Forward: India Unlocks Aadhaar Biometric Authentication for Private Sector Revolution

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Indian government has given the green light to private players to implement Aadhaar-based face authentication in their mobile apps. This was announced on February 28, 2025, and is expected to increase digital transactions, make services more accessible, and simplify customer onboarding across sectors. The Aadhaar Good Governance portal, introduced by the Ministry of Electronics and IT, will enable the process of approving authentication requests. The upgrade enables face-based authentication for e-KYC, exam admissions, and employee attendance in sectors including e-commerce, healthcare, and finance. The project is slated to transform digital identity verification and maintain regulatory conformity and data safety.
