Union Home Minister Amit Shah has laid out an ambitious, long-term plan to revitalize the Yamuna, ensure a steady drinking water supply for Delhi, and enhance the city’s sewage systems. During a high-level meeting with key ministers and officials, Shah referred to the Yamuna as “a symbol of faith” and made it clear that keeping the river clean is a top priority for the government. He proposed a 20-year vision, encouraging all involved parties to take a comprehensive approach that combines river cleaning, effective water management, and modern sewage infrastructure. Shah stressed the importance of the Ministry of Jal Shakti creating a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for sewage treatment plants, which would set quality, maintenance, and discharge benchmarks to be implemented across the country. Pointing out the vital role of the Delhi Jal Board, Shah called for the immediate filling of vacant positions and urged action to fix pipeline leaks while adopting cutting-edge technology for desilting drains. He emphasized that these measures are crucial for ensuring clean water and preventing future urban flooding.
