From Librarian to Leader: Uma Kanjilal’s Rise to IGNOU’s Top Seat

It is for the very first time in Indian higher education that Professor Uma Kanjilal has been appointed as the first woman Vice Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) after four decades of its operations. Her appointment is a significant step towards the representation of females in leadership positions in academia.

Key Developments:

Professor Kanjilal has been in the administration of IGNOU for over three decades, acting as Pro Vice Chancellor from March 2021 to July 2024 and as Acting Vice Chancellor from July 2024.

She has 36 years of experience in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) focusing on digital learning and institutional innovation.

Leadership Journey:

She has served in significant positions such as Director of the Centre for Online Education, Inter-University Consortium for Technology Enabled Flexible Education, and Advanced Centre for Informatics and Innovative Learning.

As a Professor of Library and Information Science since 2003, she has been a proponent of e-learning, digital libraries, and multimedia courseware development.

National and International Implications

Presently the National Coordinator for SWAYAM and SWAYAM PRABHA, she heads India's flagship digital education initiatives under Ministry of Education.

Internationally, she is a Fulbright Fellow and has consulted for the Commonwealth of Learning and UNRWA in Jordan.

Her honours and awards are Manthan Award for e-Education, Australia-India Council Grant, and DANIDA Fellowship.
