From Maharashtra to the World: Amit Shah Calls Shivaji Maharaj a Global Inspiration

Union Home Minister Amit Shah offered tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his 345th death anniversary at Raigad Fort, Maharashtra, marking the Maratha warrior king's long-lasting legacy. Shah termed Shivaji Maharaj a child who, with no resources such as wealth or an army of thousands, showed unmatched courage and perseverance in creating Swaraj (self-government). Shah commended Shivaji for being able to consolidate various segments of society to create an unbeatable army and break the hold of the Mughal empire.

 

Shah emphasized that Shivaji Maharaj’s ideals of pride in religion, aspiration for self-rule, and respect for one’s language transcend national boundaries and remain relevant to human dignity. He pledged that India would fulfill Shivaji’s vision by becoming the world’s leading nation by its centenary of independence in 2047. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis supported calls for a national memorial for Shivaji in Delhi and reiterated his commitment to building the Arabian Sea memorial.

 

Shah criticized Aurangzeb as well, saying the defeated Mughal emperor was buried in Maharashtra when he was killed fighting the Marathas. The incident further highlighted Shivaji Maharaj's status as a symbol of unification and a source of inspiration for generations.
