Meta has updated its WhatsApp Business API policy to ban general-purpose third-party AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Perplexity starting January 15, 2026. Only Meta's own assistant will be allowed, as the move aims to preserve WhatsApp’s infrastructure, monetize the platform, and keep business communications focused.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, will soon enforce a significant policy change on its WhatsApp Business API. From January 15, 2026, general-purpose AI chatbots operated by third-party providers such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Perplexity, Luzia, and Poke will no longer be permitted on the platform. Instead, the only AI assistant allowed to operate on WhatsApp will be Meta’s own AI assistant, Meta AI.

This update follows Meta’s intent to align WhatsApp’s original purpose as a business communication tool rather than a playground for broad AI chatbot conversations. The WhatsApp Business API was designed to help companies communicate with customers, not to host AI chatbots capable of generalized discussions. Due to increased usage by these chatbots, WhatsApp’s infrastructure faced heavy network load without commensurate revenue, as these bots do not fit into WhatsApp’s business messaging pricing model.
