Fuel for Thought: Delhi Pumps the Brakes on Old Cars to Clear the Air

From April 1, 2025, Delhi will ban refueling of cars over 15 years old at petrol pumps throughout the city. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa made this announcement as part of a multi-faceted plan to address the capital's alarming air pollution. The government will fit technology on fuel pumps to identify non-conforming vehicles. Other measures involve compulsorily imposing anti-smog guns in tall buildings, hotels, and at the airport and speeding up electrification of public transport. Virtually 90% of CNG-run buses in the public fleet will be replaced by electric buses by December 2025. The shift is planned with the goal to cut emissions from vehicles and also enhance the air quality of one of the polluted cities globally.
