Gold Limits Under Baggage Rules Under Scrutiny: Delhi HC Urges CBIC Review

The Delhi High Court has called upon the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to review the Baggage Rules, 2016, particularly concerning the duty-free allowances for gold jewelry. Currently, male passengers can bring up to 20 grams of gold jewelry valued at ₹50,000, and female passengers up to 40 grams valued at ₹100,000, duty-free. The court highlighted that, given the current market rates, these value caps are outdated and do not correspond with the permissible weight limits, leading to potential harassment of genuine travelers. The court emphasized the need for the CBIC to update these rules to reflect current gold prices and prevent inconvenience to passengers.
