At the grand Golden Jubilee event marking 50 years of New Mangalore Port Authority, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced a significant boost with the launch of 20 development projects totaling Rs 1,500 crore. These investments focus on modernizing port infrastructure, increasing mechanization, and promoting eco-friendly practices, reaffirming NMPA’s status as a major maritime gateway.

The port, which handled just 90,000 tonnes of cargo at inception in 1975, now manages over 46 million tonnes annually, supported by 92% mechanized operations. With this fresh capital infusion, NMPA aims to further expand capacity and technological sophistication to reach 100 million tonnes by 2047. Among newly inaugurated facilities are the renovated Mangalore Marine College and Technology campus and a dedicated Rs 9.51 crore office building for the Mercantile Marine Department.

Sonowal emphasized India’s position as the third-largest seafaring nation and reiterated the government’s commitment under Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amritkaal Vision 2047 to develop world-class port infrastructure, boost logistics, and promote green shipping. The minister called for increased global investments and collaboration to maintain growth momentum.
