The Indian government has set new greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity targets for 13 aluminium producers, including Hindalco and Vedanta, under the Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensity Target Rules, 2025. Each company has been asked to cut emissions per tonne of aluminium, with the base year fixed at 2023–24 production. For example, Vedanta will cut its emission intensity to 13.2260 by 2025–26 and to 12.8259 by 2026–27 from 13.4927. Firms meeting their goals earn tradable carbon credits; those which fall short buy credits or pay an "Environmental Compensation" of double the average price of a carbon credit. The scheme projects a shift from intention to action, synchronizing India's aluminium sector with global climate targets and leveraging the emerging carbon credit market.
