Green Credit Revolution, Sahyog Portal Drama, and Deep-Sea Gold Rush: India’s Bold New Moves

India is witnessing groundbreaking developments in environmental sustainability, digital governance, and resource exploration. The Union Environment Ministry’s Green Credit Programme (GCP) has rolled out a market-based mechanism to incentivize eco-friendly actions like afforestation and water conservation. With over 3,853 hectares of degraded forest land identified across ten states, entities such as Indian Oil Corporation and NTPC are leading the charge in eco-restoration efforts. This initiative aims to make environmental actions tradable, fostering a culture of sustainability while addressing industrial obligations like compensatory afforestation.

Meanwhile, the Sahyog Portal, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has stirred controversy. While 38 major IT intermediaries including Google and Amazon have joined the platform to streamline content regulation, Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) has labeled it a “censorship portal.” The government rebuffed these claims as “misleading,” asserting that the portal ensures accountability without infringing on legal safeguards.

On the global stage, Canada’s Metals Company is pushing forward with deep-sea mining plans in U.S. waters despite unresolved international regulations. This move highlights the growing demand for critical minerals like cobalt and nickel but raises concerns about environmental impact and regulatory gaps.
