Gyanesh Kumar Takes Charge as India’s New Chief Election Commissioner

Gyanesh Kumar, a 1988-batch IAS officer from Kerala cadre, has been appointed as India's new Chief Election Commissioner, replacing Rajiv Kumar who retired today. Kumar, who previously served as Election Commissioner, brings extensive experience from his roles in various ministries. He played key roles in the revocation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and the establishment of the Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. Kumar's tenure as CEC will last until January 26, 2029, overseeing 20 Assembly elections, the 2027 Presidential election, and preparations for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. His appointment marks the first under the new selection process, which has sparked controversy due to changes in the selection panel composition.
