Hooked on Victory: How Tamil Nadu’s Fishermen Reel in Success for India’s Beach Volleyball

Tamil Nadu’s fishing community is truly at the forefront of India’s beach volleyball movement, as highlighted during the first-ever Khelo India Beach Games 2025 in Diu. The state proudly took home both the men’s and women’s championships, but the real stars were athletes like 23-year-old Robin Ravi and 22-year-old Bharat Somu from Palavakkam. Growing up on the beach, their everyday routines—pulling in nets, strolling along the shore, and playing in the sand—naturally developed the stamina, balance, and strength essential for excelling in beach volleyball.

 

With little formal coaching, these players sharpened their skills by observing their elders and practicing on makeshift courts in their coastal villages. Their grit and ability to adapt to the tough sandy conditions have made them exceptional competitors, earning them international medals and a silver at KIBG 2025.

 

The close-knit support from their community means that every achievement motivates more young people to embrace the sport. Veteran coach AJ Martin Sudhakar points out that their unique lifestyle prepares them well for the game, and upcoming dedicated training camps in Chennai are set to boost their visibility on both national and international stages.

 

Now, Tamil Nadu’s approach is being recognized as a model for other coastal states, using its natural beaches to cultivate future champions and drive India’s ambitions in beach volleyball.
