India Launches Historic Cotton Mission to Double Productivity, Boost Textile Sector

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has unveiled an ambitious five-year Cotton Mission in Budget 2025-26, aimed at transforming India's cotton sector. The Rs 500 crore initiative targets increasing cotton yield from the current 450 kg per hectare to 1,000 kg per hectare, addressing the nation's pressing cotton shortage. The mission will provide cutting-edge scientific support to farmers, promote extra-long staple cotton varieties, and combat the pink bollworm disease. This strategic move aims to reduce imports, enhance farmer income, and strengthen India's position in the global textile market.
