India Launches Two-Year Nationwide Commemoration Honoring Mahatma Jyotiba Phule’s Bicentenary

A Landmark Bicentenary Celebration

The Ministry of Culture announced that the commemoration will be guided by a high-level committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The program will include cultural events, academic seminars, exhibitions, and outreach activities across India to highlight Phule’s contributions to social justice and education.

Honoring Jyotiba Phule’s Legacy

Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, born in 1827, was a pioneering reformer who fought against caste discrimination and championed women’s rights. Alongside his wife Savitribai Phule, he established schools for girls and marginalized communities, laying the foundation for inclusive education in India.

National Participation

The bicentenary celebrations will involve state governments, universities, and civil society organizations. A 126-member national committee, including former presidents, prime ministers, governors, and academicians, will oversee the programs, ensuring diverse representation and nationwide participation.

Inspiring Future Generations

The initiative aims to inspire youth by revisiting Phule’s vision of equality and empowerment. Through lectures, publications, and digital campaigns, the government seeks to integrate his ideals into contemporary discourse on social justice and inclusive growth.
