India Rolls Out Aadhaar Face Authentication to Private Sector Apps

The government of India has sanctioned the inclusion of Aadhaar-based face authentication in private sector mobile apps, a major boost to the capabilities of the national ID system. This move comes after the Aadhaar Authentication for Good Governance Rules were amended on January 31, 2025. The Ministry of Electronics and IT (Meity) has introduced the Aadhaar Good Governance portal to make the authentication approval process simpler. The broader authentication basket includes sectors such as hospitality, healthcare, credit rating bureaus, e-commerce, educational institutions, and aggregator service providers. This step seeks to improve digital transactions, governance, and service availability while countering increasing digital identity fraud.
