India Secures 26 Rafale Jets in Landmark Defence Deal with France

India has finalized a significant defence agreement with France, securing 26 Rafale fighter jets for the Indian Navy at a cost of 630 billion rupees. The deal, signed on April 28, 2025, marks a major step in strengthening India's maritime capabilities and modernizing its fleet.  

The Rafale-M jets, designed for aircraft carrier operations, will be deployed on INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya, replacing the aging MiG-29K fleet. The agreement includes 22 single-seater Rafale-M jets and four twin-seater trainers, with deliveries expected to begin in the coming years and completed by 2031.  

Defence analysts highlight that the deal enhances India's strategic air power, providing advanced combat capabilities and interoperability with existing Rafale squadrons operated by the Indian Air Force. The agreement also strengthens India-France defence ties, with potential for future co-production and technology transfer.
