India Tightens Watch on Chinese Imports Amid US Tariff Hike

India has intensified its vigilance against the influx of cheap Chinese imports following the United States' steep tariff hike on goods exported by China. The Commerce Ministry, led by Secretary Sunil Barthwal, has conducted multiple meetings to assess the situation and formulate strategies to safeguard the Indian economy. Officials are closely monitoring goods such as steel and electronics, which have been impacted by earlier tariff hikes, and have now expanded their focus to other sectors.

The US tariff hike, which imposes an additional 34% duty on Chinese goods, has prompted China to retaliate with similar measures, including export restrictions on rare earth metals essential for electronics and defense industries. India, however, faces a comparatively lower tariff of 27%, offering a competitive edge over other Asian nations like Vietnam and Thailand, which are subject to higher levies.

Experts suggest that while India's exports to the US constitute only 4% of its GDP, the tariff hike could create opportunities for Indian exporters in sectors such as textiles and electronics. The government is also taking steps to prevent the dumping of Chinese goods into the Indian market, ensuring fair trade practices and protecting domestic industries.
